Oregon is hard on decks. Rain on the coast, snow in Bend, wet winters in Portland. Most decks fail from what you can't see underneath. So we build the frame like it matters, then put a deck on top you'll actually want to live on.

How we build

Watch it
go up.

Scroll and the deck builds itself, layer by layer, the same way our crew builds yours.

01/08Footings
01 · Footings

It starts below the ground.

Footings are sized and placed for your soil, the deck's load and local code. Get this wrong and nothing above it lasts.

02 · Posts

Posts that stay put.

Set plumb on proper hardware so the load goes straight down. Wood or steel, depending on your framing package.

03 · Beams & ledger

Beams sized for the span.

So the deck feels solid underfoot, with no bounce. Where it meets your house, the ledger is flashed to keep water out.

04 · Joists

The frame you never see.

Wood, steel or composite framing, spaced for your decking and hung on proper hardware. This is where cheap decks cut corners.

05 · Decking

Boards that last.

Composite, PVC or hardwood. Laid straight, gapped right and fastened clean.

06 · Railing

Rails you can lean on.

Required at 30 inches and up. Aluminum picket, stainless cable or frameless glass.

07 · Stairs

Stairs built even.

Every step the same height, solid underfoot and built to code.

08 · Cover

Then the roof over it.

Timberframe porch, Acrylite porch, or a wood or metal pergola. Use the deck through an Oregon winter.

Still unsure? Call 503-592-3191, Mon to Fri, 7am to 5pm.

Yes. Built Better Construction LLC is licensed in Oregon (CCB #248552) and Washington (CCB #BUILTBC759LF).

Our minimum is $10,000 including materials and labor. That lets us give every project the time and crew it deserves.

We give you the estimate in person, on the spot, at the site visit.

Most raised and attached decks and porch covers do. We handle it as part of the job. Permitting usually takes 2 to 10 weeks depending on how complex the build is.

Code generally requires a guard on any deck 30 inches or more above the ground. Below that it's your choice.

The Portland metro including Lake Oswego, West Linn and Newberg, Bend and Sunriver in Central Oregon, and the Oregon Coast. Building somewhere else? Call us and ask.

Composite is the low maintenance all-rounder, PVC is the most moisture resistant premium board, and hardwood is real wood with the richest look but needs oiling to keep its colour. We'll walk you through it at the site visit.
